FAYETTEVILLE — Three Lumberton softball pitchers combined to go nine up, nine down Thursday against Douglas Byrd, throwing a three-inning perfect game in a 17-0 victory over the Eagles.

Halona Sampson pitched the first inning, Ava Hanna pitched the second and Alyssa Stone, making her first varsity pitching appearance, pitched the third. Sampson and Stone struck out all three batters they faced, while Hanna fanned two and got the other out with a groundout.

Lumberton (18-3, 11-1 United-8 Conference) scored six runs in the first inning and 11 in the third.

Nine Pirates recorded a hit and eight had at least one RBI. Ava Hanna was 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs and Aniya Merritt also had three hits with one RBI. Alona Hanna had a double and a home run with two RBIs, Tiara Stueck had two doubles and two RBIs, Stone had two hits including a double with three RBIs and Jayla Hunt had two hits. Carlee Register had one hit and two RBIs and Leea Wilkins had one hit and one RBI.

The win put the Pirates back in the win column after Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to Cape Fear, which snapped a 16-game winning streak.

The Pirates host Seventy-First on Tuesday.

Lady Rams beat Buccaneers

The Purnell Swett softball team earned a 14-6 win over Jack Britt in Thursday’s United-8 Conference home game.

Jack Britt (5-11, 3-7 United-8) scored five runs in the second and one in the third. Purnell Swett (7-10, 5-6 United-8) responded to the Buccaneers’ big second inning with a seven-run bottom half, then scored five in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Jayla Graham had two hits and four RBIs for the Rams. Chloe Chavis had three hits and Sonata Oxendine had two. The Rams totaled seven walks, including two each by Alexa Lowery and Nylah Johnson.

Kamryn Locklear eared the win, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts in seven innings. Katee Villareal was the losing pitcher for the Buccaneers.

St. Pauls baseball falls at Union Pines

The St.Pauls baseball team fell on the road in nonconference action Thursday night when they traveled to face the Union Pines Vikings. The Bulldogs managed to keep things close early in the game before the Vikings put on an offensive showing taking the 16-4 win in five innings.

The Vikings (9-9) got things going first in the bottom half of the inning when Jacob Williams brought two runners home with an RBI single to make it 2-0 early. The Vikings added to their lead on a hit by pitch with bases loaded. After two scoreless innings and down 3-0, Jaylen Jacobs hits a solo home run over the centerfield wall to put St. Pauls (5-12) on the board.

An RBI double from Jaden Parker a few batters later managed to cut the Vikings lead to 3-2. The Bulldogs managed to take the lead in the third with an RBI single from Joshua Garner.

Down 4-3, the Vikings took the lead on back-to-back hit batsmen with the bases loaded, putting Union Pines back in front 5-4. The Vikings then would flip the script on the Bulldogs and plate eight runs before closing out the third with a 13-4 lead.

The Vikings finished off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with a home run from Austin Mooring and a RBI single from Brodie Lyczkowski making it 16-4 and closing things out in the fifth for the win.

Jacobs and Joshua Garner each had two hits for St. Pauls, with Garner adding two RBIs.

Cameron McNeill got the start for the Bulldogs and went 2 1/3 innings pitches giving up six hits and nine runs walking two and striking out one.

The Bulldogs resume conference action on Friday when they host West Bladen.

Fairmont beats Red Springs baseball to sweep series

The Fairmont baseball team defeated Red Springs 5-3 Thursday to complete a sweep of the two-game Southeastern Athletic Conference series.

Red Springs (8-9, 2-3 Southeastern) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning; Fairmont (8-10, 4-2 Southeastern) scored two runs in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Parker Chavis earned his second win of the week for Fairmont with a complete-game outing, allowing two hits and no earned runs with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

Five Golden Tornadoes had one hit each: Nememiah Chavis, R.J. Deese, Kenley Callahan, Jayden Hunt and Jamarion Brown. Nehemiah Chavis, Callahan and Brown each had one RBI and Nememiah Chavis, Deese, Locklear, Parker Chavis and Jamien Scott each scored one run.

Terry Locklear and Isaiah Locklear recorded hits for Red Springs, and both also scored one run, as did C.J. Jones.

Xzavier Sinclair also pitched a complete game for Red Springs, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts.

Fairmont faces West Bladen in a two-game conference series beginning Tuesday in Bladenboro; Red Springs has a makeup home game against Clinton Monday before beginning a two-game set with Midway at home on Tuesday.
