FAYETTEVILLE — Behind four goals from Josie McLean, the Purnell Swett girls soccer team stayed perfect on the season with a 7-3 win over United-8 Conference foe Jack Britt on Tuesday in Fayetteville.

McLean’s four goals came with one assist for the Lady Rams (6-0, 3-0 United-8).

Sarah Hunt and Jahna Locklear both had one goal and two assists each. Kyndallon Oxendine had one goal and Aonor Woodell had an assist for Purnell Swett.

Jack Britt is 3-3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Purnell Swett hosts South View Friday before facing Lumberton in the Robeson Cup championship on Saturday, which has been moved to Purnell Swett.

Pirates dominate Douglas Byrd

The Lumberton softball team needed just three innings to earn a 15-0 win over Douglas Byrd in a home United-8 matchup.

Lumberton (8-2, 6-0, United-8) scored six runs in each of the first two innings and three in the third. The Pirates had 11 hits while holding Douglas Byrd (0-6, 0-4 United-8) to one hit.

Jayla Hunt was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and four RBIs for the Pirates. Alona Hanna had two doubles with three RBIs and Aniya Merritt had two hits with one RBI. Alyssa Stone, Tiara Stueck and Jaelyn Hammond each had one hit and one RBI and Carlee Register had one hit. Cameron Honeycutt reached on three walks and had two RBIs and Ava Hanna reached on two walks and had two RBIs.

Ava Hanna pitched three innings, allowing one hit with seven strikeouts.

Lumberton is scheduled to host Fairmont on Saturday.

Rams take 2nd at United-8 golf match

The Purnell Swett golf team finished second in Monday’s United-8 Conference golf match held at Gates Four Country Club in Fayetteville.

The Rams shot a team score of 352, nine strokes behind Cape Fear’s 343. Jack Britt was third with a 358; Lumberton finished fifth with a 372.

Logan Locklear led Purnell Swett with a 78, two strokes behind medalist Will Walters of Gray’s Creek. Jayden Collins shot 82 for the Rams, Jamison Locklear 89 and Elijah Chavis 103. Ben Lowery shot 104 for Purnell Swett, while alternate Landon Hunt shot 93.

Daniel Zeng’s 87 was the low score for Lumberton, Jesse Pittman shot 90, Kiran Lewis 93 and Cameron Karshner and Carson Stephenson both shot 102. Jack Stephenson shot 104 and Chase Lowry shot 117 as alternates.

Midway wins Southeastern golf match

The Midway golf team beat a field including three Robeson County schools to win Monday’s Southeastern Athletic Conference golf match at Fairmont.

Midway recorded a 324 in the team standings, 12 strokes ahead of runner-up West Bladen. Clinton was third at 349, with Fairmont fourth at 390 and St. Pauls fifth at 454. Red Springs did not have enough players to post a team score.

Clinton’s Finn Howard earned medalist honors with a 78.

Fairmont’s Clarence Herring posted an 86, the lowest score of any player from a Robeson County school, and a 33-stroke improvement from the first match of the season in late February. Christian Britt shot 92, Bryson Parker 105, Gaven Mayers 107 and Porter Driggers 117.

Daekwon Henry shot a 100 for St. Pauls, Jordan Cook 111, Nick Walters 118 and Jaden Fuqua 125.

Red Springs’ Sawyer Locklear shot a 98, Drew Brewer posted a 100 and Brezlynn Locklear 103.

Next week’s match will be hosted by St. Pauls.
