LUMBERTON — The Lumberton boys wrestling team’s senior class hasn’t lost a dual-team match or a conference tournament to anyone in the United-8 Conference through all four years of high school. In Saturday’s conference tournament, held in their home gym, they weren’t about to change that.

Behind five individual champions, the Pirates boys won the conference tournament for the second straight year — the first two times it’s been contested — becoming double champs of the league again after their fourth-straight regular-season title.

“It was a big day all around, a lot of good wrestling,” Lumberton coach James Bell said. “We had a couple of guys step up and get some matches that they had lost in dual season. A lot of guys showing a lot of promise. … That’s just coming from that group of (seniors) and them being leaders, and getting everyone to work around them and being that big core for us there,” Bell said.

Lumberton’s boys scored 200 points, winning comfortably over runner-up Cape Fear and third-place South View, which had 156 and 155 points. Purnell Swett finished eighth with 44.5.

The Pirates girls also won the conference tournament team title for the first time, finishing with 118 points to beat second-place Jack Britt, which had 108. Purnell Swett was third with 59 points.

Boys

Lumberton dominated the upper half of the weight classifications, with all five individual titles coming at 157 pounds and up. All five pinned both of their opponents in the tournament.

Matthew Foil (157) pinned semifinal opponent Braeden Fulmore from Gray’s Creek in 23 seconds before a third-round championship-match pin of Jack Britt’s Kendelle Daniels to win the title.

Bryce Ivey (165) defeated Seventy-First’s Quadir Everette with a third-round pin after a semifinal pin of Cape Fear’s Robert Moore.

James Ellison (175) won both matches with pins in the first minute of the second round, beating Jack Britt’s Eric McKinney in the semifinals and Purnell Swett’s Adrian Bonilla in the championship. Bonilla had first-round pins of his two previous opponents to reach the championship match.

Jackson Buck (190) needed less than one minute to dispatch Cape Fear’s Favour Murtala in the semifinals before pinning South View’s Christopher Ehman in the second round of the championship bout.

Jalen Terry-Winston (285) needed nearly the entire six minutes in both of his matches, but pinned Seventy-First’s Donovan Frederick in the semifinals and South View’s Joseph Hunt in the final.

“Having those champions, those are guys that have been working hard and putting in some big results for us this season, so this is just another milestone, another accomplishment on their road to success,” Bell said.

Purnell Swett’s Devon Connor also continued his strong season with a conference title at 126. Connor won his first two matches by pin and technical fall before winning an 11-1 major decision over South View’s Aleksander Long for the title.

Travelian Hall (113), Cameron Karshner (138) and Anderson Brayboy (144) earned second-place finishes for the Pirates. Hall lost the championship match to Cape Fear’s Tye Johnson by 12-3 major decision, Karshner was pinned by Gray’s Creek’s Johnathan Martinez and Brayboy lost by 6-3 decision against Jack Britt’s Brieon Mayfield.

Weight class champions earned first-team All-Conference honors and runners-up earned second-team selections. Eight Pirates and two Rams earned All-Conference laurels.

Lumberton’s Alexander Moody (106), Damicquen Powell (120) and Ladarius Page (150) finished third; Avery McNeil (215) was fourth. Trenyce Campbell-Bethea (126) and Brayden Hunt (132) did not place.

Malik Alford (150), Elija Oxendine (165), Chris Locklear (190) and Bryson Scott (215) did not place for Purnell Swett.

Girls

The Lumberton girls’ title was propelled by three individual champs, with Teresa Canady (114), Kylie Brigman (120) and Wyntergale Oxendine (235) taking first-place prizes.

All three received byes to their championship matches. Canady defeated Jack Britt’s Isabel Urbina and Brigman topped Jack Britt’s Rebecca Griffin, both with pins right at the end of the first round. Wyntergale Oxendine stayed perfect on the season (31-0) with a second-round pin of Purnell Swett’s Kaley Hunt.

Two Purnell Swett girls also earned individual titles, with Iyanna Crawford (132) and Savannah Oxendine (165) each winning their classification.

Crawford did so with a championship match pin of Jack Britt’s Gracie Bays, the only match she had to wrestle. Bays had defeated Lumberton’s Lily Bell with a pin in the semifinals; Bell finished third.

Savannah Oxendine pinned Lumberton’s Edit Saavedra in 24 seconds in the semifinals before pinning Seventy-First’s Zyasia Hutchinson in 50 seconds in the title match; Saavedra was third for the Pirates.

Three Pirates took second place in their respective divisions. Nykira Purdie (100) pinned Purnell Swett’s Yanile Lopez in 39 seconds before falling by pin in the championship match to Jack Britt’s Brooklyn Wilson; Lopez finished third.

Yahida Fricks (126) won by a 4-3 decision over Seventy-First’s Sara Swilling to reach the championship match, but was pinned there by Jack Britt’s Katelin Lock.

Janya Rolland (185) pinned Seventy-First’s Saliyah Brooks in the semifinal and lost a 6-2 decision to Jack Britt’s Victoria Shepherd in the championship bout.

“We had a couple of girls step up, our two second-team All-Conference, those girls stepped up and got some big wins,” Bell said. “Janya Rolland beating a girl from Seventy-First that was a state placer last year at 185. Yahida Fricks getting an All-Conference here with her match in the semis. Those are two seniors, but they’re first-year seniors so it’s a big accomplishment to show their growth in their season of wrestling.”

Lumberton had six All-Conference selections and Purnell Swett had three.

Brackets for the dual-team state playoffs will be announced by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association on Thursday; Lumberton is hoping to host first- and second-round matches on Saturday in both the boys and girls tournaments.
