GREENSBORO — Seven Lumberton boys wrestlers placed and Jackson Buck took home some more hardware as the Pirates were among the top tier out of the nearly 60 teams that competed at the Gate City Grapple last weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Lumberton placed fourth in the team standings with 130.5 points; Davie County won the team competition with 170 points, Nolensville (Tennessee) was second with 163.5 and Laney was third with 134.

Buck won the title at 190 pounds and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights, winning all four of his matches in the event by pin or technical fall. This included a second-round pin of Athens Drive’s Zaid Marjan in the semifinals and a first-round pin of Nolensville’s Brennen Neal in the championship match. Buck improved to 31-0 on the season.

Jalen Terry-Winston led the other placing Pirates with a second-place finish at 285. Terry-Winston reached the championship match with four straight pins, including a semifinal pin of Jacob McCollam from Riverbend (Virginia); Clayton’s Deondre Johnson beat Terry-Winston by 9-4 decision for the class title.

The Pirates’ Casey Hardin also competed in the 285-pound bracket, placing fifth. McCollam pinned Hardin in the quarterfinals — preventing a semifinal match between teammates Hardin and Terry-Winston — and Hardin lost again in the consolation semifinals, but he won the fifth-place match by medical forfeit.

Matthew Foil finished third at 157; the Pirates’ senior lost in the quarterfinals to Clayton’s Pete Winterstein before winning four consolation matches including the third-place match by 3-1 decision over Laney’s Tristan Cotto. Lumberton’s Dexter Stephens also competed in the 157-pound class, but did not place.

Alexander Moody (106) finished fifth in his class, reaching the semifinals before a pin by Cape Fear’s Mac Johnson. After a consolation semifinals loss, Moody won the fifth-place match by 14-1 major decision over Riverbend’s Zachariah Strickland.

James Ellison finished fifth at 175, surpassing the 100-win mark for his Pirates career by winning five matches in the tournament. He reached the quarterfinals before a 10-1 major-decision loss to Nolensville’s Tre McTorry, and lost a consolation semifinals match before winning by 5-0 decision in the fifth-place match over Cedar Ridge’s Kaden Tatro.

Travelian Hall (120) rounded out Lumberton’s placers with a sixth-place finish. He reached the quarterfinals before losing a 4-2 decision to Davie’s Aidan Szewczyk. Hall lost his consolation semifinal match and fifth-place match due to injury, with the ladder also against Szewczyk.

Lumberton’s Damicquen Powell (120), Ladarius Page (150), Kene Black (165) and Avery McNeil (215) also competed in the event and did not place.

Purnell Swett’s Devon Connor posted a seventh-place finish at 132. He reached the quarterfinals with two wins before he was pinned by Stuart Cramer’s Bentley Sly. After an additional loss in the consolation rounds, Connor won by 5-3 sudden-victory decision over Josh Manning from Staunton River (Virginia) in the seventh-place match.

Connor was the Rams’ only wrestler competing in the event. With 11 points earned from Connor’s result, Purnell Swett finished 52nd in the team standings.

In the boys JV event, Lumberton’s Trenyce Campbell-Bethea won the 126-pound title. He beat his first three opponents by pin before winning a 4-2 decision over Glenn’s Colzack Farrow in the championship match.

Lumberton and Purnell Swett will both compete in the Robeson County Championship, to be held Thursday at Lumberton starting at 6 p.m.

Oxendine wins, Pirate girls 4th at Gate City Grapple

Behind an event title from Wyntergale Oxendine, Lumberton’s girls also finished fourth in the Gate City Grapple.

The Pirates earned 91.5 points, finishing behind team champion Havelock, who had 154 points; Hoke County at 140; and Laney at 108.5. Purnell Swett was 13th with 35 points.

Oxendine pinned all three of her opponents in the event to win the title at 235. This included a 19-second pin of Hoke County’s Zaria Robinson in the semifinals, and a third-round pin of Havelock’s Nyema George in the championship match.

Teresa Canady (114) and Janya Rolland (185) each finished third for the Pirates. Canady lost by 6-5 decision to Riverbend’s Hailey Turner in the quarterfinals before winning four straight consolation matches, each by pin. She pinned Southeast Raleigh’s Samantha Perez-Gonzalez in 38 seconds to win the third-place match.

Rolland reached the semifinals before she was pinned by Cleveland’s Winston Yarborough. Rolland won her next two matches; the first was by technical fall before she pinned Havelock’s Kyndal Harris in the third-place match.

Kylie Brigman (120) was the fourth Lumberton wrestler to place with a fifth-place finish. She lost by 14-4 major decision to Pasquotank County’s Ahriana Scales in the quarterfinals and lost an additional match in the consolation rounds before winning the fifth-place match with an 8-3 decision over Jannelle Sidbury’s Athens Drive.

Both Purnell Swett wrestlers to compete in the event also placed, with Iyanna Crawford finishing third at 132 and Brylie Wilkins taking fifth at 152.

Crawford won he first two matches by first-round pin before a semifinal loss to Trinity’s Bliss Joyce by 8-6 decision; she won her two consolation matches, including a third-place match pin of Swain County’s Tasia Neadeau.

Wilkins was pinned by Freedom Christian’s Caroline Powell in her second match of the tournament, but won three of her last four matches through the consolation rounds including a pin of Hoke County’s Zada English in the fifth-place match.

Lumberton’s Nykira Purdie (100), Naziya Hassan (120), Yahida Fricks (126), Evelyn Ortiz (126) and Lily Bell (132) also participated in the event and did not place.
