MONROE — Two Lumberton boys wrestlers, three Pirates girls and one Purnell Swett girl won individual championships at the Roughedge Rumble held over the weekend at Parkwood High School in Monroe.

James Ellison (175 pounds) and Jackson Buck (190) won boys titles and Teresa Canady (114), Kylie Brigman (120) and Wyntergale Oxendine (235) won girls titles for the Pirates. Purnell Swett’s Iyanna Crawford (138) also won an individual championship.

Lumberton’s girls finished second in the team competition with 124 points, behind event champion Jack Britt; the Pirates boys were third with 163 points behind winner West Rowan and runner-up Mt. Pleasant. Purnell Swett’s girls were eighth and the Rams boys finished 20th.

Ellison defeated Union Academy’s Eli Williams by 9-4 decision in the championship match after previous wins by fall over Jack Britt’s Garrett Harmon, Weddington’s Luke Shipley and Porter Ridge’s Krizangel Flores in the semifinals.

Buck pinned Jack Britt’s Xavier Lorenzo to start the tournament then won three straight matches by technical fall, beating Mt. Pleasant’s Evan Sifford, Porter Ridge’s Edison Morales in the semifinals and West Rowan’s Dakota Athey by an 18-3 tally in the championship match.

All three Pirates girls who won their classification pinned all of their opponents throughout the event.

Two of Canady’s pins came in the first 31 seconds of the match and none of the matches reached the three-minute mark; she defeated Ardrey Kell’s Nandana Marpadaga, Catawba Ridge’s Sadie Wise, North Gaston’s Susan Lopez in the semifinals and Mallard Creek’s Brooke Jackson in the championship.

Each of Brigman’s pins came in the first round; she beat Cuthbertson’s Lara Ozboz, North Gaston’s Jaid Morris, Lumberton teammate Naziya Hassan in the semifinals and Mallard Creek’s Diya Dhananjay in the championship, which lasted just 29 seconds. Hassan also lost in her consolation semifinal match and did not place.

The Rams’ Crawford also pinned all four of her opponents, beating Jack Britt’s Katelin Lock, North Gaston’s Joseline Hernandez, Mallard Creek’s Sarem Desalegn before defeating Olympic’s Ana Sanchez for the title.

Oxendine defeated Purnell Swett’s Kaley Hunt by pin in one minute, 12 seconds, then beat Parkwood’s Kierra Hood Chambers in the semifinals and Lake Norman’s Nadia Volk in the championship. Hunt won four consolation matches to finish third place, pinning Mount Pleasant’s Railyn Isenhour in the third-place match.

Three more wrestlers from the Pirates boys team finished second in the event. Alexander Moody (106) pinned two of his three opponents en route to the championship match before losing by technical fall to Lake Norman’s Ryder Menard.

Matthew Foil (157) pinned his first two opponents before a 6-0 decision in a semifinal win over Mallard Creek’s Trey O’Connor; he lost the title match to Lake Norman’s Eli Murray by 10-4 decision.

Casey Hardin (285) used two pins and a major decision to reach the championship match before a 13-5 major decision loss to Mt. Pleasant’s Colt Kluttz.

One wrestler from each the Pirates boys and girls and Rams boys and girls teams finished third in the event. Lumberton’s Travelian Hall finished third, losing by 4-1 decision in the semifinals but recovering to win two consolation matches including the third-place match, with a pin of West Stanly’s Stone Martin. Janya Rolland (185) was third for the Pirates girls with a quarterfinal loss and three consolation wins, pinning Parkwood’s Julie Ann Maruirscio in the championship match.

In addition to Hunt’s third-place finish at girls 235, Purnell Swett’s Devon Connor (132) lost to Providence Day’s Colin Abraham by 24-19 decision in the quarterfinals before beating Abraham by 10-6 decision in the third-place match.

Lumberton boys Damicquen Powell (120), Trenyce Campbell-Bethea (126), Nicolai Von Rupp (132), Cameron Karschner (138), Juan Villalobos (150), Lumberton girls Evelyn Ortiz and Naomi Gutierrez-Rodriguez (126), Yahida Fricks (132), Edit Saavedra (165) and Azahara Munoz (185) participated in the event and did not place. Purnell Swett’s Jachriston Kline (boys 126), Cassidy Chavis (girls 152) and Brylie Wilkins (girls 165) also competed and did not place.
