CHARLESTON, S.C. — The UNC Pembroke volleyball team registered 62 kills, but Emmanuel hit .241 from the net and tallied 11 blocks on the way to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25) victory over the Braves on Sunday in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship inside the North Charleston Athletic Center.
The setback for the Braves (21-14) snapped an eight-match winning streak. Vanja Przulj and Katie Pressley were named to the Conference Carolinas All-Tournament team for UNCP. Emmanuel (22-10) will now advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Ruby Countryman and Katie Pressley used a big block at the net to give UNC Pembroke an 8-3 lead early in the opening set. Abby Peduzzi’s kill extended the UNCP lead out to 20-15, but Emmanuel went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. Emma Fraidenburg and Katelynn Swain’s block tied the score at 22 apiece, but the Lions won three of the final four points to take the first set, 25-23.
UNCP trailed the second set 10-7 after an Emmanuel block, but four consecutive points for UNC Pembroke gave the Braves an 11-10 lead. The Black & Gold hit a match-best .357 from the net and rattled off six straight points to run their lead out to 19-16 to stay in control of the set en route to a 25-22 win.
The Lions scored nine of the first 10 points of the third set to lead 9-1 following a UNCP attack error. UNCP cut its deficit back to 9-5 after four consecutive points, but EC extended its lead out to 18-9 off of a kill from Alaina Emminger. The Braves put together a 4-0 scoring surge to chip away at their deficit, 23-18, but Emmanuel hit .257 from the net to capture the set 25-20.
UNC Pembroke used a kill form Vanja Przulj to take a 14-11 lead in the fourth set. A UNCP attack error tied the score at 16 apiece, but Emma Fraidenburg’s kill gave the Braves a slight 18-17 lead. The Lions went on a 7-2 run to hold a 24-20 lead and used a kill from Alaina Emminger to win the set 25-21 and clinch the championship.
Przulj had 29 kills, 11 digs and two aces for UNCP, Countryman had 10 kills and two blocks, Peduzzi had 16 kills and 15 digs, Pressley had 52 assists, Kyleigh Coghlan had 19 digs, Swain had four blocks and two aces and Fraidenburg had three blocks.
