FAIRMONT — The Fairmont girls tennis team earned a 5-3 win over Clinton in the second round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s 2A dual-team state playoffs on Monday.

Fairmont (12-0), the No. 3 seed in the 2A East Region, will host the winner of Monday’s East Duplin-South Columbus match in the third round on Wednesday.

Fairmont and No. 14 Clinton (11-5) split the six singles matches, with each team claiming three victories. The Golden Tornadoes then won both doubles matches that were completed to clinch the overall match.

In singles, Fairmont’s wins came as Addison Waldo defeated Clinton’s Kensley Lamb 7-5, 7-5; Madalynn Godwin topped Emily Edgerton 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5); and Skyler McNeill beat Ainsley Parker 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 10-5. Clinton earned singles wins as Kensley Puryear won against Helen Boeshore 6-2, 3-6, 10-6; Lensey Cabral defeated Shylylia Barksdale 4-6, 6-3, 10-8; and Lilly Williams topped Jaelynn Hayes 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Boeshore/Waldo beat Puryear/Lamb 8-1 and Godwin/McNeill defeated Parker/Cabral 8-5.

Lumberton, Purnell Swett advance to United-8 soccer semifinal

The boys soccer teams from Lumberton and Purnell Swett faced each other for the third time this season on Tuesday in the United-8 Conference tournament semifinal after both earned quarterfinal wins Monday in Lumberton.

The top-seeded Pirates earned a 9-0 win over eighth-seeded Douglas Byrd, while fifth-seeded Purnell Swett beat fourth-seeded South View 1-0.

Angel Robles scored a hat trick in the first seven minutes of Lumberton’s victory, with one unassisted goal and one assist each from Robinhio Tanis and Mark Ramirez in the span. Emilio Carrera scored the fourth goal for the Pirates (20-5), assisted by Ramirez, and Tanis scored the team’s next two, with one assisted by Robles and one unassisted, making it 6-0 within the match’s first 20 minutes.

Luis Gomez and Bryan Macias scored the last two Lumberton goals in the first half, with Mohammed Obaid assisting on Macias’ goal, and the Pirates led 8-0 at halftime. Ramirez scored on a goal assisted by Robles five minutes into the second half, ending the match early by rule due to the nine-goal margin.

The loss ends the season for Douglas Byrd (0-16).

The 1-0 win for Purnell Swett (14-9) came after a goal by Kevin Locklear with 22 minutes left, assisted by Marcos Ibarra.

Branlon Brooks had four saves in goal for Purnell Swett.
