LUMBERTON — Three doubles teams and one individual from Robeson County advanced to the semifinals of the United-8 Conference girls tennis tournament Wednesday at Lumberton.

In singles, Lumberton’s Brittney Collins advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jacqueline Hinkle. She will face Jack Britt’s Taylor Benson in the semifinals, who defeated Purnell Swett’s Nyla Mitchell 6-0, 6-4.

Lumberton’s Nellie Jackson lost 6-2, 6-0 to Gray’s Creek’s Kaylee Ledford. Purnell Swett’s Cynthia Locklear won one match, beating South View’s 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-2, before losing in the quarterfinals to Jack Britt’s Chalei Hodge 6-0, 6-0.

Two Lumberton doubles teams will meet Thursday in the semifinals. Gracie Hall and Dean Whitley defeated Gray’s Creek’s Becca Slade and Alyssa Chavis 6-3, 6-1. Alyssa Stone and Logan Hickman won two matches to reach the semifinals, with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gray’s Creek’s Grace McLean and Meadow Ellis and a 6-2, 6-2 win over Purnell Swett’s Raven Cummings and Sydney Brooks.

Jori Jones and Kylie Kirby also reached the semifinals, with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jack Britt’s Faith Wiegand and Lauren Nazario and an additional win by forfeit. They will face Riley Nazario and Kelly Chay in the semifinals Wednesday.

Purnell Swett soccer tops Seventy-First

The Purnell Swett boys soccer team earned a 3-2 win Wednesday over Seventy-First.

Cale Harris scored two goals in the win and Zachary Hunt had one. Marcos Ibarra, Brayden Locklear and Jalen Hunt all had an assist.

Daniel Hunt had eight saves in goal for the Rams (11-3, 7-2 United-8).

Seventy-First is 6-9 overall and 4-6 in the United-8.

Purnell Swett faces Red Springs Saturday in the third-place match of the Robeson Cup at Lumberton.
