LUMBERTON — The drowning death this past weekend of a 5-month-old baby is being investigated by police, and whether or not charges will be filed will be up to the District Attorney’s Office.

Israel Burden, 21, found the baby unresponsive in a bathtub in his apartment at 526 E. 22nd St. about 3:49 p.m. Saturday, according to a Lumberton Police Department press release. The baby was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and later flown to another hospital for further treatment, but died there Saturday night.

The statement did not identify the child by name. The body has been sent to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh for an autopsy.

“There were no obvious signs of trauma to the baby, and CPR was in progress when first responders arrived on scene,” Lumberton police Capt. Terry Parker said in a statement.

The investigation continues, he said, and the State Bureau of Investigation is assisting.

“Once the case is concluded the Robeson County District Attorney’s office will review all findings and facts,” Parker said.

Anyone with information concerning this case should call the Lumberton Police Department 910-671-3845 and ask to speak with Detective Deana Locklear.
