LUMBERTON — Southbound traffic on Interstate 95 was flowing again in Robeson County as of 5:30 a.m. today after state transportation workers worked day and night since Wednesday performing emergency repairs.

A void underground had formed where I-95 South crosses Boyce Road, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The issue was discovered during a routine bridge inspection. The void was underneath a section of asphalt roadway that is connected to the concrete deck spanning Boyce Road.

For safety, NCDOT closed the southbound portion of the interstate Wednesday afternoon.

Employees of NCDOT drove steel sheeting into the ground next to the bridge to create a new barrier, then filled the void with backfill that included gravel and dirt. A paving contractor overnight Thursday added asphalt over the worksite. The asphalt needed to harden and cure for a few hours before the highway was reopened at 5:23 a.m. today.

The original estimate to complete the repairs was Saturday morning.
