LUMBERTON — A 24-year-old Fairmont man died Thursday in a vehicle collision on Interstate 95, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Trooper B.L. Bullard was dispatched about 10:33 p.m. to a crash involving three vehicles near mile marker 2 on I-95, said 1st Sgt. S.B. Lewis, of the State Highway Patrol.

Ajerris McRae died after his Kia Forte struck a tractor-trailer operated by 65-year-old Ronnie Fortner, of Dunn, while McRae was attempting to merge into the left lane, Lewis said. McRae’s vehicle then ran off the road to the left, struck the cable guard rails in the median and a southbound tractor-trailer operated by 35-year-old Jandry Bello, of Miami, Florida.

McRae was pronounced dead at the scene, Lewis said. Bello suffered minor injuries, and was not taken to the hospital. Fortner was not injured in the crash.

The crash appears to have occurred because of a lane control violation, the 1st sergeant said.

“There’ll be no charges issued,” Lewis said.
